Video: Causes of Bubbling Paint

Host, Sarah Rutan: If you see bubbles forming on areas of your house paint, you might not know what’s causing this. To get an explanation, we’re in Castro Valley with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Greg Severs of S & S Painting and Coatings.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Greg Severs: Sometimes underneath the paint film you have non-breathing membrane, oil-based coatings, and you can get moisture underneath or you could get trapped gases. Trapped gases are old coatings like linseed oil, varnish, log oil. And what happens is on the south and the southwestern exposed elevations, the film heats up, and it causes this to turn into a gas, and it gets trapped underneath and causes a bubble. And the way to remedy that is you have to scrape it down to the bare wood and strip that area.
