With seal coating, a sealant is applied to the asphalt surface that protects it from the elements. It keeps rain water from penetrating the surface, prevents erosion from sun exposure, and protects against stains from oil and other fluids. An asphalt surface should be seal coated every two to three years.

While homeowners can feasibly do seal coating themselves, it’s better to have it done by a professional paving company. First of all, seal coating is difficult. Not only is it time and labor intensive, it’s extremely dirty work. Additionally, a paving company has access to professional grade products that you cannot get at a normal hardware store.

For these reasons, a company with the right equipment and methods will be able to perform the job much faster and achieve better results. So even if you are a proud do it yourselfer, consider leaving asphalt seal coating to a professional.
