Video: Preparing for a Fence Installation

Getting a new fence, generally you're going to be bordering with a neighbor, at least on one side, let's say. You probably want to get them involved from the get go. You can also get a proposal first and then engage with them later. There's lots of different ways to do it, but making it a great process which can help maintain the neighbor relationship, even improve it, can actually be something that you can do.

So it's really good to engage with a professional that's going to help you through that process. Some of the different ideas that come up that neighbors may not agree on is sometimes height, sometimes style, sometimes cost. If you have a tenant occupied property and then a primary residence, the tenant occupied property may want to do a less expensive fence and then the primary residents may want to have something a little bit nicer, a little bit taller.

There's definitely ways to negotiate that and ways that make. Both parties happy. You can also have differences on where the property line is. A surveyor is the only one that can help you with the property line. Fences are generally on what's considered assumed property lines. If neighbors are in agreement, you can leave it there.

If they're not, that's when the surveyor gets involved. Just remember there are always solutions to the problems. Reach out to a fence professional and they should be able to help you find a solution to those problems.
