ALAMEDA — Paul Gerrard: The traditional storage tank water heater was designed and patented in 1908. It is a hundred-year-old technology. I always challenge people to say, “What is it that you use every day that’s had no technological advancement in over a hundred years?” Maybe a spoon?
Tankless technology is the next step in hot water production. Tankless water heaters are more efficient and provide endless hot water. There is a misconception because they are known as on demand water heaters, that you will get hot water instantaneously. Unfortunately, that’s not quite true. In fact, you can take quite a lot longer to get hot water to a fixture which can waste water.
There are other alternatives to tankless water heaters, including high efficiency storage tank water heaters, which have the best of both worlds. A high efficiency storage tank water heater is like a tankless in that it provides endless hot water at greatly improved efficiency, but it doesn’t have the long wait time that you get with a tankless water heater. Also has a lot of other applications that it can use, including some space heating applications.
