Innovative Mechanical, Inc. provides residential and commercial heating and air conditioning (HVAC) services for clients throughout the San Francisco Peninsula. The company installs and repairs furnaces and air conditioning systems, installs air filtration and ventilation systems, fabricates and installs galvanized and copper sheet metal, and more.

President Al Morando has 30-plus years of experience working in the HVAC industry. Innovative Mechanical was founded in 1984 to help Bay Area residents find the right home comfort systems to fit their needs and budget. "More than 80 percent of our client base is comprised of repeat customers," says Mr. Morando. "Our biggest goal is to keep them happy."

Innovative Mechanical has adopted several Green business practices—it offers eco-friendly cleaning; "e-recycles" its high-tech products; and recycles paper, plastic, glass, aluminum, and construction and demolition debris. It's also a member of Bay Area organization Build It Green and it employs Certified Green Building professionals.

The most common problem with heating and air conditioning systems is people taking them for granted. If a flashlight or a toaster breaks, you replace it. But it never occurs to many people that the same holds true for the most expensive equipment in your home: your heating and air conditioning systems.

“Those items are only going to be efficient for so long,” says Owner Kenneth Morando, owner of Innovative Mechanic, Inc.

If you have an older furnace or air conditioning system, that’s more true than ever. The last decade has seen a surge in environmental awareness among consumers. The heating and air conditioning industry has followed suit, creating new products built on Green technologies that may barely have existed even a few years ago.

“Something made ten years ago is going to be far less efficient than something you buy today,” says Mr. Morando. Therefore, it might make good economic sense to replace an older unit with a newer, high-efficiency one. It will almost certainly make good environmental sense.

When you choose someone to undertake that replacement or preventative maintenance, Morando recommends choosing a company with longevity. Insist they be licensed and insured. And don’t hesitate to ask about their warranty in very specific terms. If your new furnace stops working after a few weeks, they’ll almost certainly agree to repair it at no cost. But what about a few years?

If you question a company’s credibility, look for outside sources of validation: professional associations, watchdog groups, the Better Business Bureau. It’s always a good idea to get a reference, too. In this industry, a reputation is often a company’s most valuable asset. Choose a company with great word of mouth recommendations.

Founded in 1984, Innovative Mechanical has operated from the same South San Francisco location for the past 25 years. The company specializes in residential and commercial heating and air conditioning systems and services. They also fabricate and install sheet metal flashing, gutters, and many other metal products.

Owner Kenneth Morando prides himself on customer service and follow-up. After every job, the original estimator will check back to confirm the work was done to the client's satisfaction.

It comes entirely without obligation or pressure. With technology constantly evolving, Mr. Morando believes that his installers should keep their knowledge and skills current. With this in mind, he hires union members who are required to undergo continuing education courses.

Innovative Mechanical knows your time is extremely valuable. They'll give you a narrow window–often 20 minutes–within which to expect your installer to arrive. Most of their competitors offer four hours at best. The installers show up on time, in uniform, and ready to work. And they leave the site as clean as they found it, with no mess or debris left behind.

Innovative Mechanical is a certified Trane dealer and a member of the U.S. Green Building Council. They are a Better Business Bureau accredited business and member of the Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors' National Association.
