Polymeric joint sand is used to fill the joints between individual stones in paver installations. It contains a latent plastic element that, when exposed to water, becomes activated and gives the sand an adhesive quality that locks the pavers into place. Because of its plastic-like nature, polymeric joint sand is pliant. This attribute is especially important in the Bay Area, due to the constantly shifting clay soil. Unlike a rigid product like concrete grout, polymeric joint sand is able to keep pavers locked in place while allowing for soil movement and resisting cracks.

Another great attribute of polymeric joint sand is it’s available in many different colors, which enables homeowners to further customize their paver installations. However, an area where this function often gets overlooked is paver pool patios. When installing a paver pool patio, you should make sure the joint sand matches the color of the pool mastic—the band that seals the gap between the pool’s edge (aka the coping) and the patio. By choosing a polymeric joint sand that matches your pool mastic, you’ll get a better overall aesthetic effect.
