To stay healthy, the spine needs to get regular movement via stretching and exercise. When the spine doesn’t get that movement, it can become stiff and subluxated. During sleep, the pressure put upon the spine by the bed exacerbates this discomfort, which can diminish the quality of sleep.</p> <p>What’s more, the relationship between sleep and spinal health goes both ways: Not only does poor spinal health inhibit proper sleep, poor sleep inhibits recovery from spinal issues. The most important part of your sleep cycle is REM sleep, which is when your nervous system and your brain work to heal all the bodily components you’ve used during the day. If you aren’t getting proper REM sleep, your body isn’t able to heal itself. This can create a downward spiral that may eventually lead to substantial health issues, spinal and otherwise.</p> <p>To avoid this unhealthy trajectory, be proactive about addressing both spinal health and sleep hygiene. Set aside time each day to give your spine proper movement and be sure to get plenty of rest during the night.
