Sean Maloney: Foundational Principles
By James Florence
For Sean Maloney, the foundations of a lifelong career in construction were laid early. “When I was 16, I helped redo the foundation of the local church in my hometown of Nicasio,” he remembers. “Later, I started working with a contractor in Marin County and ended up doing a lot of foundation work for him. So, when I started my own contracting business in 1990, that seemed like a natural area for me to focus on. Thirty-plus years later, I continue to specialize in foundation installation and repair.”
Today, as owner of Maloney Construction Inc., Sean says his favorite part of his job is tackling challenging problems. “I enjoy going out to the jobsite, meeting the homeowners, looking at the issues they’re experiencing and determining how we’re going to address them. The problem-solving aspect is especially interesting because different situations require unique solutions.”
A resident of Novato (where he lives with his wife, Denise, and their children), Sean spends his time outside of work on a variety of active pastimes. “My main hobby is playing golf, which I try to squeeze in whenever I get the chance,” he details. “I also enjoy mountain biking, working on my house and hanging out with my family.”
In regard to a professional philosophy, Sean espouses the value of a helpful spirit. “My company doesn’t have an official motto, but I think a good one would be, ‘We’re here to help,’” he muses. “I believe in working hard and doing what’s right, no matter the circumstances. Whether the job is easy or difficult, it’s important to give your best effort, especially when someone is counting on you to help them.”
When asked what he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Sean says he’d spend more time with family. “My grandson lives out of town, so it’s a little tough to see him because I’m so busy. So, if I retired from contracting, I’d definitely spend more time with him, as well as the rest of my family.”
