Scott Turner: Inspired by Love
By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter
When asked how he got into the property inspection industry, Scott Turner cites an unlikely inspiration for his seminal career move: a romantic relationship. “When I met my wife, Barbara, she had recently purchased a home,” he remembers. “She had a pre-purchase inspection done, but the company didn’t do a good job, so she was having a lot of issues—most notably, the heater wasn’t working. I had an extensive background in construction, so on our first date, I hooked up her HVAC system. To make a long story short, I never left and ended up fixing the rest of the problems with the house.”
Later, after Scott and Barbara were married, the circumstances of that first date inspired them to open a new chapter in their life together. “Barbara had experience with running a business—specifically, handling customer service and data administration—and I had experience in all phases of construction, so we started thinking, ‘Why not combine our skill sets and start our own home inspection business?’ We liked the idea of having a business that would help people avoid purchasing bad properties by providing thorough, honest assessments. That’s how Elite Home & Commercial Property Inspections was born.”
Today, Scott says his favorite part of his job is the problem solving. “Every house is different, so my job is never repetitive—there’s always something new to encounter. When I find an issue, whether it’s crowning in a floor or water stains on a wall, I have to investigate and figure out what’s going on. I really enjoy the challenge of uncovering the roots of those problems.”
In regard to a professional philosophy, Scott espouses the value of integrity. “We base everything off of our integrity and making sure each client gets a thorough inspection. Other inspectors might charge less for their services, but they’ll just rush through and get it done as fast as possible. For them, it’s a numbers game, but for us, it’s about giving every customer a good value for their money and providing them with the information they need to make an informed decision.”
When asked what he’d do if he retired tomorrow, Scott has plenty to say. “Barbara and I are always thinking about retirement. That’s why we work so hard now—so we can retire young enough to enjoy it. If I retired tomorrow, I would buy a couple hundred acres in Tennessee and build our forever house. I’d also get back to some of my hobbies, like hunting, fishing, camping and taking road trips. Basically, I’d spend more time having fun, being adventurous and trying to stay young.”
