Ross Rohrer: Creative Building
By Matt Solis, Editor
Ross Rohrer’s journey into the remodeling industry began with a love for woodworking and art. “I started this business in 1976, initially working with different forms of wood and eventually moving into high-end furniture with decorative carvings,” he explains. “That turned into a cabinet shop after about five years, and then in the mid-80s I made the move into general contracting.”
Today, as owner of Residential Design and Build, Ross says the most rewarding parts of his job are designing projects and seeing them come to life. “The beginning and the end of the job are always really gratifying. I put a lot of work into what I do, so when I can make a client smile with a design or a finished product, it feels great.”
Born in the Central Valley, Ross spent much of his childhood in Switzerland (where he learned German) before moving to San Jose in 1960. An avid bike rider, he says one of his favorite aspects of life in the South Bay is the access to outdoor activities. “The Bay Area offers endless trails and open spaces, whether you’re road cycling or mountain biking. You could probably spend a lifetime trying to find every route, so it’s a lot of fun.”
In addition to cycling, Ross likes spending his free time hiking and creating 3D sculptures and art. “I’ve also built three custom houses for myself, so I understand the challenges that my clients face,” he adds. “There are a thousand decisions to make when you’re building a house, so being my own customer has given me a unique perspective on how to guide others through the process.”
In terms of a guiding philosophy, Ross espouses the importance of the Golden Rule. “I try to treat others the way I’d like to be treated,” he offers. “It’s not always easy, but self-awareness helps.”
When asked what his life might look like if he retired tomorrow, Ross sees no end to his creative pursuits. “I would probably travel and spend more time on my art,” he says. “Creating is something I’ve always enjoyed. I just like bringing ideas to life.”
Ask Me Anything!
Q: Coffee or tea?
A: Both.
Q: If you could immediately travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
A: Somewhere in Europe, like Italy, France, Switzerland or Spain.
Q: What’s your favorite restaurant?
A: E&E Stakeout Grill in Florida.
Q: Do you prefer being somewhere hot or cold?
A: I like California because you get both. I can ride my bike around the neighborhood on a hot day and then hop in the car and drive to Tahoe where there’s snow.
