Mike Petrovich: Tree Service Roots
By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter
CONCORD — When asked to recount the origin of his tree service career, Mike Petrovich says it’s rooted in family. “My dad had a tree service and landscaping business, so I grew up learning the trade from him and my uncles. After high school, I decided to continue on that professional path. I worked for a handful of companies before starting my own business, Mike’s Tree Service. In 2003, I started my current business, Absolute Best Care. In addition to my 40-plus years of experience, both of my sons have been involved with the company, so it has been neat to pass my knowledge to the next generation.”
Mike says his favorite part of tree work is helping customers in their hour of need. “It’s nice to be the hero. When you get a call from a property owner who’s in a stressful situation, it’s very rewarding to ‘save the day’ and take care of things for them.”
A resident of Contra Costa County (where he lives with his partner, Diana), Mike spends his time outside of work on a variety of pastimes. “My favorite hobby is fishing,” he details. “I usually go to areas like Coyote Creek or the San Pablo Reservoir. There’s someone about being on the water and the peace and quiet of nature…I’m a very energetic person, so being in that environment gives me a chance to recharge my batteries.” Mike also enjoys bowling and volunteering his time to coach youth sports. “I used to coach a lot of tournament baseball, and I’ve being doing that on and off for the past 17 years.”
When asked about a professional philosophy, Mike espouses the importance of clear communication. “When you’re servicing trees, you often have to explain things to your customers—what you’re doing, why you’re doing it and so on. But if you can’t explain it in a way they can understand, they aren’t going to be satisfied. That’s why being a good communicator is an important part of running a business. Of course, it’s also important to be a good listener. That way, you can be sure everyone is on the same page in regard to expectations.”
