Maverick Fernandez: A Landscaped Life
By Matt Solis
Even from a young age, Maverick Fernandez seemed destined for a career in the landscaping industry. “My father used to have a house maintenance business, and he would take me and my brothers to jobsites because we didn’t have a babysitter,” he recalls. “I actually went to college out of state to study sales and business, but all my projects were about landscaping because that’s what I knew best. When COVID hit in 2020, I decided to come back to the Bay Area and help my dad grow Fernandez & Sons Landscaping.”
Today, Maverick says his favorite part of his job is the satisfaction of seeing clients enjoy the results of the company’s work. “It’s fulfilling to see kids running in the yards that we’ve created, knowing they now have a space to play and their parents have a place to relax and entertain. Ultimately, we want our clients to be satisfied with every aspect of their projects.”
A lifelong resident of the Bay Area, Maverick currently lives in Concord, where he appreciates the city’s diversity and convenience. “I love that everything is close by and there’s a mix of cultures,” he says. “You can find every type of food and friendly people everywhere.”
Life as the co-owner of a successful landscaping business can be stressful, but Maverick makes sure to strike a balance by prioritizing family time with his fiancée and their two children. “Running a business is a 24/7 job—there always seems to be paperwork when I get home—but my fiancée and I help each other as much as possible,” he says. “We’re a good team, so we try to enjoy the time we have together.”
Some of Maverick’s personal hobbies have taken a temporary backseat to his family responsibilities, but he still makes time to stay active. “I used to run cross-country, so I like going for runs to clear my head,” he details. “Before we had kids, I used to do a lot of off-roading and jet skiing, so I hope to get back to that when they get older. But I also like spending the weekends with them, going to different parks and kid-friendly spots like Children’s Fairyland in Oakland.”
In terms of a personal or professional philosophy, Maverick believes all forms of success are built on relationships. “It’s not who you are, it’s who you know,” he says. “I don’t think you can really succeed by yourself—you’re going to need help along the way, so I try to keep an open mind whenever I meet new people.”
When asked the first thing he’d do if he could retire tomorrow, Maverick already has a dream destination in mind. “I would go to Acapulco, Mexico, which is where my mom is from,” he shares. “We know the area very well and it’s quiet and peaceful, so it feels like home.”
