Marcus Mosley: Leading by Example
By Matt Solis, Editor
With more than 25 years of experience, Marcus Mosley has done plenty to establish himself as an esteemed plumbing and HVAC veteran, but his introduction to the industry wasn’t actually part of his original life plan. “Initially, I wanted to become a helicopter pilot in the military,” he remembers. “However, I needed corrective surgery and it wasn’t available at the time, so I decided to pursue plumbing instead. I did have some other options, like becoming a military police (MP), working on ballistic missiles and being a cook. However, during a conversation with my father, he advised me to consider becoming a blue-collar worker so I would be gainfully employed when I left the military.”
Eventually, Marcus worked his way up through the industry to become a regional manager at Roto-Rooter, but the constant travel that the job required led him to pursue a different professional path. “I controlled an area that stretched from Denver to Hawaii, so I had to visit businesses in those regions all the time,” he explains. “I was tired of flying around and spending several weeks away from home, so when I got the call to become general manager at Albert Nahman Plumbing, Heating and Cooling, it was an easy decision.”
Today, Marcus says his favorite part of his job is leading his team toward success. “When I started working here, they needed some stability and someone to guide them, and I believe I’m good at both of those things. For me, seeing my team members happy with their jobs and making sure our customers are satisfied are more important than making money. I’m here to build a culture and foster a family environment. In fact, we recently had an ‘employee appreciation day’ where everyone got to know each other without talking shop and it was great!”
A native of Washington state, Marcus currently lives in San Leandro with his wife, Mallena, and their English bulldog and Siamese cat. A relative newcomer to the Bay Area, he’s still adjusting to the higher cost of living, but he says there’s still plenty to love about the region. “The best part of the Bay Area is the food. The air quality is a little different because everything in Washington is so crisp and green, but it didn’t take long to get used to living here.”
Outside of work, Marcus spends most of his time engaged in his favorite pastime: playing golf. “I love golf because it’s tranquil,” he offers. “I work seven days a week and I’m completely emerged in this business, so whenever I get to go golfing, it takes my mind off of work and contributes to my mental wellness.”
When it comes to a guiding philosophy, Marcus focuses on three core principles that he believes have greatly benefited him both personally and professionally. “I don’t believe in stressing over things that I can’t control, so if I run into a problem, the first thing I do is stop and identify it,” he details. “Once I know what I’m working with, I’ll create a solution for that problem and work hard to execute it. Identify, create, execute—that’s how I live my life.”
When asked what he’d do if he could retire tomorrow, Marcus says his first move would be to hit the golf course and follow that up with some rest and relaxation. “This line of work can be stressful, so if I retired tomorrow, I think I would just take a breather and enjoy life for a while.”
