Joey Mangano: A Refreshing Career
By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter
SAN JOSE — After starting out in general construction, Joey Mangano eventually found himself in a more refreshing career. “I started working in construction right after high school,” he says. “At one point, we were remodeling a house for a guy who had obviously been successful, and I asked him what he did for a living. He said he owned an HVAC company. That kind of inspired me, so I went to a community college, took some classes and got certified in the trade. After gaining a few years’ experience, I started my own company.”
Today, as owner of Air Care Heating & Cooling, Inc., Joey says his favorite part of his job is system design. “Rather than just swapping out HVAC units, I like taking the time to properly design systems. A lot goes into HVAC equipment nowadays, and it takes a careful design to achieve optimum energy efficiency, comfort, and air quality.”
A resident of San Jose (where he lives with his wife, Victoria, and their three children), Joey expresses his appreciation for the region’s pervasive diversity. “This area is diverse on multiple levels, from the people who live here to the landscape and architecture. Overall, it just makes for a richer quality of life.”
Outside of work, Joey can usually be found spending time with his family. “Work takes up most of my time, so when I’m off, I like to be with my wife and kids. I also play softball and enjoy going camping and hiking. One of these days I’d like to do some traveling, but with work being as busy as it is, I’m not quite there yet.”
In regard to his professional career, Joey believes in doing things the right way or not at all. “For me, it’s all about taking care of our clients and doing the job correctly,” he affirms. “That means installing equipment properly per manufacturer specifications, not just slapping it in there. A lot of contractors just swap units in and out rather than taking the extra step and designing the system to perform efficiently. We always take that extra step, which our customers really appreciate.”
When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Joey says he’d do some traveling. “I’d like to see other parts of the world, like Europe. I also think it would be cool to do some volunteer work, like going to impoverished countries and building houses.”
