Javier Martinez: Providing Opportunity
By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter
MORGAN HILL — Like many immigrants, Javier Martinez came to the United States in search of opportunity. Having long since found the object of his quest, he’s now passing it on to the next generation. “When I was 16, I left my home country of Mexico and came to the U.S., where I got into the roofing industry through a friend,” he remembers. “Eventually, I got my contractor’s license and, in 1992, started Winter Roofing, fulfilling a lifelong dream. Today, I employ 15 people, including my wife and our two older children, so it makes me very happy that I’ve been able to provide opportunities for my family and employees.”
A resident of San Jose (where he lives with his wife, Irlanda, and their son, Angelino), Javier expresses his appreciation for life and work in the Silicon Valley. “It’s a good community to live in; I really like the diversity,” he says. “I also like the fact that the roofing industry is very competitive here, because it keeps me motivated to be the best at what I do.”
Outside of work, Javier likes to unwind by fishing and spending time with family. “I have a boat and like to go fishing when I have a chance—which, as busy as I am, isn’t very often,” he says. “I work long hours all week long, so when I get a day off, I like to relax and hang out with my family.”
In regard to his professional career, Javier espouses the importance of providing helpful, honest advice. “A roof is a big investment, so I feel it’s my responsibility to educate my clients and help them make good decisions,” he affirms. “It makes me feel good to give my customers options that meet their needs and fit their budgets.”
When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Javier says he’d take a long-deferred vacation. “We’ve been working really hard all these years, so the first thing I’d do is take my family on a vacation. Maybe we’d go to Alaska—I hear the fishing is pretty good up there.”
