Gerardo Chavez: Painting the Town

Like many teenagers, Gerardo Chavez spent his last years of high school wondering what he should do with his life, but after making a spontaneous move, his professional pathway became clear. “I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do after high school, so I joined a union and went through a painting apprenticeship program,” he remembers. “After I graduated, I became a journeyman painter and started working for different contractors.”

Gerardo’s journeyman status took him all over California and even to different states, but he still found himself wanting more from his occupation. “I would always go the extra mile during projects and get in trouble with my bosses because they were focused on profits and I was taking the time to make my work look better,” he explains. “Ultimately, I decided that if I was doing extra work that customers like, I should probably just start my own thing. So, I got my license, built my clientele base by working as a subcontractor and started my own business in 2014.”

Today, as owner of CG Coatings Inc, Gerardo says his favorite part of his job is meeting new customers and helping them with their painting and restoration projects. “I meet someone new every time I do an estimate, which I really like. I just enjoy talking to people and taking care of their problems.”

Gerardo moved to the Bay Area in 2016 and currently resides in Vacaville, where he appreciates the peaceful qualities of life in the outer North Bay. “Vacaville is quiet and still kind of country, which is why I like it,” he says. “It’s also nice to experience all four seasons.”

A devoted husband and father, Gerardo dedicates most of his free time to making memories with his family. “We have a 14-year-old, a six-year-old and a four-year-old, so there are always lots of activities going on,” he says. “My wife and I like taking them to the park, helping them with their schoolwork and just spending quality time with them. You never know how long things will last, so we try to enjoy these moments while we can.”

Q: Coffee or tea?

A: Coffee.

Q: Are you a dog person or a cat person?

A: A dog person. We have a Shih Tzu/Chihuahua mix.

Q: Do you prefer being somewhere cold or somewhere hot?

A: Somewhere hot. I like the beach.

Q: What’s your favorite thing to do on a rainy day?

A: Watch some movies and enjoy looking out the window at the weather.

Q: What’s your favorite holiday?

A: Christmas.
