Gary Knowles: Building Heritage
By Matt Solis, Editor
Gary Knowles’ entry into the construction industry was guided by family tradition and a passion for craftsmanship. “I started 40 years ago, apprenticing under my father in his business,” he recalls. “I ended up going to college in London, and after I graduated, I spent seven years working for a construction company in the Caribbean. That’s where I met my wife, and in 1989, we decided to move to California and I started GK Construction.”
Today, Gary says his favorite aspect of his job is working with clients to turn their dreams into reality. “It sounds a bit corny, but it’s very rewarding to meet new customers and help them bring their visions to life. Those relationships have been the cornerstones of my career.”
A proud resident of Pleasanton, Gary says his favorite part of life in the East Bay is the small-town atmosphere. “Main Street and the surrounding areas have such a quaint charm. Even though Pleasanton is growing, it still retains that old-town feel.”
Outside of work, Gary’s hobbies reflect his love for both adventure and leisure. “I enjoy sailing, although I don’t get to do it as often as I’d like,” he says. “We used to have a boat, but we didn’t use it much so we ended up selling it. I also like horseback riding and I do a fair amount of reading in my free time.”
When asked what his life might look like if he retired tomorrow, Gary says he doesn’t see himself stepping away entirely. “My wife and I have talked about it, but neither of us really wants to retire. Maybe we’ll slow the business down a bit, but we’d likely use the extra time to travel.”
