Dimitar Georgiev: A Window of Opportunity
By Matt Solis, Editor
Dimitar Georgiev didn’t have a lot of experience when he entered the window industry in 2003, but it didn’t take long for him to master the craft. “I started as a helper for a company that installed vinyl retrofit windows,” he remembers. “After nine months of learning the trade, I became a lead installer—they gave me a company truck and I started leading jobs. Three years later, I moved on to Andersen Windows and worked there for a few years. Eventually, I decided it would be best to get my contractor’s license because I had enough experience to work for myself. I partnered with my friend, Dimitar Stoilov, and in 2011 we quit our jobs and started Abstract Windows.”
Today, Dimitar says his favorite part of his job is utilizing his expertise to bring his clients’ visions to life. “I like presenting design tools to potential customers and giving them an idea of how we can design their projects. I also love the ‘before and after’ aspect of the job. It’s a great feeling to take a house with old, cracked windows and completely renew it after two or three days of work.”
Originally from Bulgaria, Dimitar moved to the Bay Area in the early 2000s and currently resides in Belmont with his wife, Christina, and their son, Nikolai. He says his favorite part of life in the South Bay is the combination of small-town feel and big city opportunities. “I like living in a large, urban area—there’s more competition, but there are also more opportunities for success. It’s an expensive place to live, but I’m used to it. We’re close to big cities like San Francisco and San Jose, but it still feels kind of rural. I like that mixture because I can be close to the action but still live in a place that’s calm and quiet.”
Outside of work, Dimitar enjoys going to the ocean, playing darts and ping-pong, and spending time with his family. “My wife and I like going to nice restaurants in San Carlos and hanging out with friends, but we’re also happy to just relax at home,” he adds. “We go on vacation a few times a year, usually to Bulgaria to visit family but also to places like Mexico.”
When it comes to a personal or professional philosophy, Dimitar stresses the importance of being honest in every interaction. “My dad raised me to always tell the truth, even though it’s sometimes painful,” he offers. “I would rather tell the truth and lose than tell a lie and win. I don’t know if that counts as wisdom, but it’s what I believe.”
When asked what his life might look like if he retired tomorrow, Dimitar says the first order of business would be a long vacation followed by a relocation down south. “I would take several months to go around the world to places I haven’t seen—that would be wonderful. After that, I think I would end up in Los Angeles. I like the Bay Area, but if I retired with a lot of money, L.A. seems like a better fit because there’s more to do.”
