Bobby Nijjar: Team Player
By Matt Solis
Bobby Nijjar was no stranger to the real estate industry when he started his career path, but it took a keen observation from an outside party to make him realize he could transition from peripheral involvement to complete immersion. “My family has been in real estate since the late ’70s, mostly on the property management side,” he explains. “Over the years, I would always have friends and family ask me for tips, and of course I was happy to help. One day, my dad said, ‘Why are you giving out free advice? You could turn this into a business and represent buyers and sellers.’ That’s how it all started.”
In 2003, Bobby founded Bobby & Nikki Nijjar Real Estate team with his wife, Nikki. Today, he says his favorite part of his job is meeting new people and helping them achieve their real estate goals. “I love the experience of talking to a client about the pros and cons of a house they’re interested in, especially things they’ve never even thought of, like where the sunlight comes in. It feels good to help them and see how excited they are when they’re able to move into their new home.”
Born in Sacramento but raised in the Bay Area since he was two years old, Bobby expresses his appreciation for the unique character of his lifelong locale. “There’s a ton to love about the Bay Area, from the weather to the diversity of the community to the entertainment and sports,” he says. “Northern California seems to have it all, and if you’ve traveled around, you know you just can’t beat the experience.”
Outside of work, Bobby enjoys spending time with Nikki and catching up with their two sons, both of whom are in their 20s. And even though his days of coaching their childhood baseball teams are behind him, he still points to those experiences as some of his proudest moments. “I was really into sports growing up and I played baseball at a high level even beyond college, so when my kids got to a certain age, I had to ask them if they wanted me to continue playing or coach them instead, and I was happy when they chose the latter. Coaching my sons and taking them to several championship games was the best time of my life. The camaraderie and closeness felt just like when I was playing. And Nikki was always involved in organizational things as the team mom, so we really enjoyed that part of their upbringing.”
In terms of a professional philosophy, Bobby believes in the importance of always looking toward the future. “I often say, ‘The best is yet to come,’ so it’s a perspective of not looking back,” he says. “Live in the moment, but also remember that if you’re doing things the right way, things will keep getting better.”
When asked what he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Bobby says the first move would be gathering his family for an extended trip abroad. “We’re very family-oriented, so travel would be a great way to get away from our day-to-day activities and spend more uninterrupted time together. I know Nikki would like that—she used to work for an airline, so she has seen different parts of the world that I haven’t seen.”
