Working With a Neighbor on a Fence Project

Installing a new fence is an exciting home improvement project, but if the fence runs along a shared property line, it’s important to consider your neighbor’s input before getting started. Here’s how to successfully navigate the process:

Discuss your plans. Some people prefer to get a proposal first and then engage their neighbor, while others involve them from the beginning. Either way, you should keep the lines of communication open to ensure both parties can work toward a mutually beneficial solution.

Address common points of disagreement. Neighbors may have different preferences when it comes to fence height, style and cost. If one property is a primary residence and the other is a rental, the priorities might differ—one side may prefer a budget-friendly option while the other might want a higher-end design. Make sure you talk about these concerns before work gets underway.

Determine property lines. One of the most important aspects of installing a fence is making sure it’s placed correctly. Many fences are built along assumed property lines, but if there’s any disagreement, you can bring in a surveyor to officially determine the property boundary. If both neighbors agree on placement, there’s usually no need for a survey.

Work with a professional. A fence contractor can streamline the process by recommending materials, dealing with local regulations and zoning laws, and coming up with cost-effective solutions that work for both parties.

No matter what challenges arise, there’s always a way to reach an agreement. With open communication, professional guidance and a willingness to compromise, you and your neighbor can complete a fence project that benefits both of your properties.
