OAKLAND — Host, Sarah Rutan: When choosing a roofing product, it’s important to consider the impact of Title 24 energy efficiency requirements. To learn more, we’re in Oakland with Shane Wakerling of General Roofing Company, speaking on behalf of Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Mike Wakerling.
Shane Wakerling: Since 2014, California’s Title 24 requirement has now gone into roofing. This now requires both low and residential steep slope roofs to be meeting certain energy requirements. There are various options for you when considering cool roof solutions. There are cool roof shingles, cool roof synthetic shakes and slates. There are also cool roof coatings for your flat roofs as well as PVC and TPO style roofs. If you do fall in love with a non-Title 24 compliant product, don’t worry. There are several different exceptions that you can follow. One being that you can have R38 insulation, another being that your HVAC system, if it is in the attic, is wrapped and insulated. If you don’t have an HVAC system in your attic, that is also another option. If you do have any questions, I suggest speaking to your qualified roofing contractor.
