Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Nick Granato: Hi, here’s your tip of the day for garage cabinets and storage. When looking at this project, here’s some key elements that you should be looking at. Number one, make sure that the cabinets are installed off the floor. This helps prevents insects and bugs, rodents, from crawling inside. If you have a water heater or washer and dryer in the garage, it’s good when the cabinets are off the floor should you have any flooding. Hopefully the water doesn’t get inside the cabinets.
The other thing is, if your floor is coated, finished with an epoxy style coating, and you go to clean the floor, you can clean the entire floor without water getting inside the cabinets as well.
It’s best to install the cabinets flush against the wall into the studs of the wall for heavy duty support. You also need to consider how you are you going to utilize the storage inside these cabinets, so that you can make sure that the height, the width, and the depth, as well as how the cabinets are made on the inside will accommodate all of your needs, such as sports equipment, garden tools, holiday decorations, et cetera. And whether or not you need any drawers for items. Those are all key things that most customers are going to be looking at.
The other thing with the cabinets too is it’s great to have 1-inch thick shelving, because that will give you better support for the heavy items. You tend to put heavier items in the garage cabinets. And it’s also good to have soft close hinges, because especially if you have kids, because then that prevents them from slamming the doors.
