Video: Tips for a Mold-Free Washing Machine

LOS ALTOS — Host, Sarah Rutan: If you own a front-load washing machine, there are a few preventative steps you should take to avoid mold issues. Today we’re in Los Altos with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Steve Spratt of HPS Palo Alto to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Steve Spratt: Modern front-loading washing machines offer several benefits: In addition to their sleek design, they’re more energy- and water-efficient than their top-loading predecessors. Plus, clothes come out of the spin cycle nearly dry, which reduces dryer runtime. However, there’s one thing you should be aware of if you own a front-loading washer—otherwise, you might notice that your clothes smell a little musty.

Because of their design, front-loading washers tend to retain more latent moisture than top-loading models. One area where this can really be an issue is the rubber door seal, which has numerous folds where moisture can collect. Additionally, the configuration of the tubs in front-loading washers makes it difficult to get all the water out.

Due to the presence of residual moisture, mildew can start to develop inside your washer, and once it gains a foothold, it’s difficult to remove. One simple way to avoid this is to leave your washer’s door open when it’s not in use, which will provide more air ventilation. It’s also a good idea to clean the seal and tub on a regular basis, as well as to run a cycle with a mildewcide tablet on occasion. Altogether, these proactive measures will help keep your washer mildew-free.
