Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Ricardo Valderrama: Let’s talk about smoke detectors. And, carbon monoxide detectors. As of January 1st, 2015, new rules. If you have a remodel, a furnace replacement, air conditioning, the inspector will ask you for this type of smoke detector with a 10 year battery. No more chirping when the battery dies. You’ll be okay for 10 years. After 10 years, you’ll throw it away, and you get another one.

Now, let’s talk about carbon monoxide detectors. Most localities suggest to get a combination of carbon monoxide detector and smoke detector, to be located in the hallways. The same kind of idea. It does have a 10 year battery. No more chirping. No more dead batteries. And, after 10 years, you replace the whole thing.
