Video: Differentiating Redwood Fence Materials

SAN JOSE — Host, Sarah Rutan: When planning to install a redwood fence, it’s important to realize that not all redwood is of the same quality. Today we’re in San Jose with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Julian Meza of Meza’s Fence to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Julian Meza: When selecting a redwood fence, we have three qualities to choose from. The first quality is going to be the construction common to outer cuts of the redwood tree, unique traits of it. It tends to be pink-ish, red-ish, gold-ish – some knots in the board as well. The next quality on as well, it’s called B Grade Select as well. B Grade Select has the same type of color tint to it, but it tends to be towards the red, white, pink-ish, gold-ish as well. The only thing, it tends to have fewer knots. Knots are not acceptable bigger than dime-size, so it’s almost a clear board. Next quality on up as well it tends to be the top of the line which is the Con Heart inner cut of the redwood tree. A huge myth is that it tends to be a bit more termite-resistant, completely all red in color. It does have knots, but the unique of it, it comes from really nice, old-growth redwoods.
