While the National Electric Code (NEC) sets the baseline for electrical safety in the United States, it’s important to recognize that these standards are often the minimum requirements for professionals. In modern homes with an array of appliances, it’s smart to go above and beyond these minimums for a more efficient and reliable electrical setup.
For example, the NEC might specify two 20-amp circuits for kitchen counters, but in reality, this might not be sufficient for the numerous appliances that you use every day. To enhance safety and prevent circuit overloads, consider installing three to four 20-amp circuits on your counters. This will allow you to run multiple devices simultaneously without worrying about tripping circuits.
While this upgraded design may involve a slightly higher initial cost compared to sticking to the minimum code, it’s an investment that pays off in the long run. A more robust electrical system not only ensures your appliances work seamlessly but also reduces the risk of electrical issues and repairs in the future.
