Two Often-Overlooked Plumbing Components

CONCORD — Even minor plumbing system components can cause major problems if ignored. Here are two often-overlooked plumbing components you should be aware of:

Washing machine hoses

Few people think about the rubber hoses that deliver water to their washing machines. However, if ignored, these minor components can deliver an unwelcome surprise. Old rubber washing machine hoses are known to burst without warning, resulting in major water leaks. If you aren’t home when this happens, you could return to find that your garage has been converted into a swimming pool!

The best way to prevent this situation is to invest in braided washing machine hoses. Whereas rubber hoses are only good for five years, braided hoses have a lifespan of 15 years and are less likely to burst due to their sturdy design. Considering the potential cost of water damage, this modest investment is a wise preventative measure.

Shut-off valves

Most plumbing fixtures and appliances have one or more valves that allow for the water to be shut off if a leak occurs or a repair/replacement is needed. When a shut-off valve isn’t used for a long period of time, it can freeze up. When this happens, the valve may not work when you need it to, which can put you in a tough spot.

Fortunately, there’s a simple way to prevent this from happening. Once a year, go through your home and turn every plumbing shut-off valve off and on again. Since valves freeze up from lack of use, this simple measure will help keep them functioning properly for the long term.
