When remodeling your home, choosing the right piping is a crucial decision that impacts both cost and long-term durability. Many contractors use PEX piping because it’s affordable, flexible and resistant to corrosion. However, even though it’s the industry standard, it has one major drawback: it’s vulnerable to rodents.
Because PEX pipes are made of malleable plastic material, it’s easy for rats and mice to chew through them, especially in areas like attics and crawl spaces. Some homeowners have even experienced costly water damage due to rodents gnawing on PEX pipes in their plumbing systems and causing flooding.
To prevent this, I recommend using copper pipes whenever possible. They’re slightly more expensive than PEX pipes, but they’re highly durable and rodent-resistant, so they’re a solid investment if you live in an area that’s prone to rat or mice infestations.
