Should You Move Out During a Remodel?

Living at home during a remodeling project can be challenging, but whether you should temporarily relocate depends on the type and scope of the work. Some projects allow you to remain at home with minimal disruption, while others can make daily life difficult. Here are three things to consider when deciding whether to stay or move out during construction:

1. The scale of the project
For smaller projects like bathroom renovations, staying at home is usually feasible—especially if you have an extra bathroom available. Similarly, if the project only affects one room, such as a bedroom addition at the back of the house, you may be able to remain onsite with minor inconveniences.

2. The room being remodeled
A kitchen remodel is one of the most disruptive home improvement projects. Cooking becomes nearly impossible once demolition begins and you lose access to essential appliances like the stove, sink, and refrigerator. Some homeowners find temporary solutions like relocating the fridge to another room or washing dishes outside, but if your remodel is expected to last several weeks, moving out may be the better option.

3. Your comfort and safety requirements
Construction zones can be noisy, dusty and full of hazards, which can make daily living uncomfortable, especially for families with young children or pets. If the work is expected to extend over a long period or impact multiple areas of your home, securing temporary accommodations can reduce stress and provide a better living environment.
