EL CERRITO — Do you have an interior doorknob set that’s old or malfunctioning? In most cases, you should easily be able to replace it yourself. Typically, all you’ll need is a Phillips screwdriver (or, better yet, a drill with a Phillips attachment). Most doorknobs are connected by a couple of long screws; to remove yours, simply unfasten the screws with your screwdriver or drill. You can use the same tool and method to remove the latch inside the door.
Some doorknob sets have decorative plates designed to hide the screws, which makes removal a bit more complicated. In this case, there should be a small slot in the neck of each knob. Insert a nailset or narrow screwdriver into this slot and press down on the spring-loaded retaining pin inside. At the same time, use your other hand to pull on the knob; it should slide right off. Finally, pry off the decorative plate to expose the inner screws and unfasten them.
Once you’ve successfully detached the doorknobs and latch, take them to your local hardware store. By bringing in the original set, you’ll be able to choose a new one that’s compatible with your door. If you’re unsure whether a particular doorknob set will be compatible, ask a store representative.
