How to Find a Hidden Water Leak

Hidden leaks in your home can lead to water damage, increased utility bills and even structural issues if left undetected. Taking a proactive approach to finding leaks can save you time, money and stress. Here are three simple steps to follow:

1. Check your water meter. Turn off all water fixtures and appliances (including sprinklers) and avoid using water for two hours. Record the initial water meter reading, then check it again after the waiting period. If the reading has changed, you may have a hidden leak.

2. Look for signs of moisture. Check under sinks and around toilets for water stains, discoloration or moisture. If you notice any warped materials or musty odors, that may indicate a hidden leak.

3. Listen for the sound of dripping or running water (when no fixtures are in use). These auditory clues can help pinpoint a leak that’s not immediately visible.

If you find a leak, contact a plumbing company to address the issue before it leads to more significant damage. Regular checks like these can help keep your home safe and your water bill under control.
