How to Check Your Home for Dry Rot

Dry rot is a serious issue that can compromise the structural integrity of your home if left unchecked. It occurs when moisture seeps into areas that are prone to leaks (windows, doors, decks, foundations), causing the wood to deteriorate, become moldy and eventually crumble. Here’s how to check for dry rot in your home:

Look for visible signs. Dry rot usually presents itself as darkened, cracked or shrunken wood. In some cases, you may also notice a musty odor.

Perform the poke test. Use a hard object like a pencil or pen to gently press into the wood. If it feels soft/spongy or crumbles easily, there’s likely dry rot present.

Check for fungal growth. Dry rot may cause a white, cotton-like substance or orange-brown spore dust to appear on wood surfaces.
