DIY Rodent Exclusion

SAN JOSE — When it comes to rodent control, one thing you can do is identify and remove any potential entry points into your home. This simple step can save you money and help keep your home rodent-free.

First, walk around the perimeter of your home and look for any gaps or holes around piping, as well as compromised crawl space vents. Few people realize how good rodents are at fitting through small spaces. Rats can fit through a hole the size of a quarter and mice can fit through a hole the size of a dime, which means any hole that’s dime-sized or larger should be sealed.

The best way to seal exterior holes and gaps is with metal. Don’t use foam—rodents can eat right through it. Instead, use 1/4-inch metal mesh, which can be purchased at your local hardware store. Use a drill to fasten the mesh around each opening. This will exclude rodents from gaining access to your home from the outside.
