Blinds, Shades and Shutters: A Basic Overview

PLEASANTON — There is a wide range of window treatments available on the market today. Three of the most popular options are blinds, shades and shutters. To learn more, read the following overview of each of these window treatments:

Blinds

One of the most economical window treatments on the market, blinds come in two different formats: horizontal and vertical. Horizontal blinds are available in wood, faux wood and metal, with slats or louvers that range in thickness from half an inch to two and a half inches. You can also choose between cord-operated or cordless blinds. The most common application for a vertical blind is over a sliding glass door. For a modern upgrade, consider a fabric-wrapped vertical blind.

Shades

Shades are sometimes confused with blinds, but they’re completely different products. One of the main differences is the type of material that shades are made from: most are fabric, although there’s also the option of woven wood. Shades come in several different styles, including roller shades, Roman shades, sheer shades and cellular (aka honeycomb) shades. Shades are known for their excellent insulation, light filtering and room-darkening capabilities.

Shutters

Formally referred to as plantation shutters, this window treatment comes in two different materials: genuine wood and composite. Composite shutters come exclusively in white, whereas wood shutters are available in a variety of textures, stains and paint colors. Shutters have the largest slat or louver size of any window treatment, ranging from two and a half to four and a half inches thick. Shutters are a highly aesthetic option that add both functionality and beauty to the home.
