Achieving Title 24 Compliance With Your Roof

OAKLAND — California’s Title 24 energy code now extends to residential roofing, with specific requirements for both flat and sloped roofs. For this reason, if you’re planning to replace your roof in the near future, you’ll need to ensure it meets these requirements.

Fortunately, there are many options for achieving Title 24 compliance with a roof. One is to use cool roofing materials, which are specifically designed to improve energy-efficient performance. For sloped roofs, these include cool roof shingles, synthetic shakes and slates; for flat roofs, these include cool roof coatings, as well as PVC and TPO style roofs.

If you’re partial to a particular roofing material that’s not Title 24-compliant, don’t worry: there are alternative ways to achieve compliance. After all, the main concern is reducing heat gain in the attic, and there are several ways to achieve this beyond installing cool roofing materials. Examples include upgrading attic insulation to R38, having the home’s HVAC system (if located in the attic) wrapped and insulated, and improving attic ventilation.

Since Title 24 requirements tend to get stricter as time goes on, it’s important to work with a roofing contractor that stays up to date with industry changes. They’ll be able to help you find a roofing solution that fulfills both Title 24 requirements and your personal preferences.
