3 Ways to Extend the Lifespan of Your Plumbing System

Proper plumbing maintenance can help you prevent costly repairs and unexpected breakdowns. Here are three tips for keeping your plumbing system in top shape:

1. Know where your shutoff valves are. Understanding where your emergency water and gas shutoff valves are located is crucial, especially in areas prone to natural disasters like earthquakes. If a pipe bursts or a gas leak occurs, quickly shutting off the water or gas can prevent extensive damage and hazards. Take the time to locate and label these valves, and make sure everyone in your household knows how to operate them in an emergency.

2. Schedule annual plumbing inspections. Regular plumbing inspections help identify minor leaks, drips and hidden issues before they turn into major problems. At least once a year, have a plumber check your pipes, crawl spaces, toilets, and water fixtures for signs of wear and tear.

3. Maintain your water heater. Your water heater is one of the most used appliances in your home, and regular maintenance can significantly extend its lifespan. Look for a plumbing company that offers annual water heater service—they’ll flush sediment buildup and look for other ways to improve the heater’s efficiency. Some professionals can even install full-port drain valves, which provide a more effective way to remove sediment.
