3 Steps for Planning a Kitchen Remodel

Planning a kitchen remodel is an exciting process, but knowing when to begin construction is just as important as choosing the right design. Starting too soon can leave you without a functional kitchen for longer than necessary, while careful scheduling can help ensure a smoother experience. Here are three factors to consider before setting your start date:

1. Secure permits and finalize pricing. Before work begins, you should have a signed contract with your remodeling contractor and a clear understanding of the total cost. Also, any required permits should be submitted and approved. Delays in obtaining permits can push back your timeline, so it’s important to complete this step as early as possible.

2. Account for “long lead items.” Many kitchen remodels require custom or special-order items that take weeks or even months to arrive, like cabinets, countertops, sinks and specialty fixtures that are sourced from distant suppliers. Starting demolition before these materials are available can leave you without a usable kitchen for long periods of time, so make sure to plan your construction schedule around their delivery.

3. Align your timeline for a smoother process. Once you have a confirmed delivery date for key materials, coordinate with your contractor to begin construction. This approach ensures that once demolition begins, the project can move forward without unnecessary delays. A well-planned schedule prevents your kitchen from sitting in an unfinished state for too long, making the remodeling experience much more manageable.
