When installing a new roof on your home, it’s important to focus on elements that will ensure long-term performance and efficiency. Here are three ways to get the most out of your roof replacement project:
1. Prioritize proper ventilation. Ventilation plays a crucial role in keeping your roof and attic space functioning properly. There are two types of ventilation: passive (ridge vents, eyebrow vents) and active (solar-powered or electric attic fans). Ridge vents are the best option for most homes, as they allow consistent airflow along the peak of the roof.
2. Use heat-reflective materials. A well-designed roof can help reduce heat absorption, making your home cooler and more energy-efficient. Materials like cool shingles come with a special coating that reflects a percentage of heat, while radiant barriers installed under the roof reflect heat away from the attic.
3. Upgrade your gutters for proper drainage. Replacing your roof is a good time to upgrade your gutters as well. To ensure effective drainage, slope gutters toward the downspout to prevent standing water, position the downspout correctly to guide water away from your home’s foundation, and install gutter screens to prevent debris buildup and clogs.
