2 Window Tips for Winter

Winter often brings unique challenges for homeowners, especially when it comes to windows. Proper understanding and maintenance can prevent unnecessary concerns and ensure your windows perform as intended. Here are two tips for winter window care:

1. Understand exterior condensation. If you notice condensation forming on the outside of your windows, don’t be alarmed—it’s actually a sign that they’re doing their job. Modern energy-efficient windows are designed to reflect heat back into the home via the inside panes. As a result, the outside glass panes become colder, leading to condensation in certain weather conditions. This is perfectly normal and not an indication of window failure.

2. Keep weep holes clear. Heavy rain during winter can lead to water collecting in the tracks of your windows. This is normal, as windows are designed with a channel system that directs water to exit through weep holes on the exterior. However, if these weep holes become clogged with debris, water may not drain properly and can lead to property damage. That’s why it’s important to regularly inspect and clean weep holes to ensure they remain unobstructed. A simple cleaning with a soft brush or compressed air can prevent water buildup and keep your windows functioning optimally.
