Keeping your home secure doesn’t have to be complex or expensive. With a few simple steps, you can avoid unnecessary hassles and ensure your locks work smoothly. Here are two places to start:
1. Get a fresh key instead of copying a worn-out key. If your key is worn and doesn’t turn as smoothly in the lock as it once did, it’s best to avoid going to a hardware store for a direct copy. Copying a worn-out key simply produces another worn-out key, which may not work effectively in your lock. Instead, take your key to a professional locksmith who can cut a fresh key based on the original key code.
2. Regularly replace batteries in keypad electronic locks. Keypad locks are popular because of their convenience, but it’s important to keep their batteries fresh to avoid lockouts. Set an annual reminder to replace the batteries—whether it’s every Christmas, New Year’s Day or another date that you’ll remember. Changing the batteries is simple: The battery compartment can be accessed from inside your home and most units have easy-to-remove trays that only fit one way, making them foolproof.
