A Handy Tool for Finding a New Credit Card

Have you thought about getting a new credit card but don’t know where to begin? The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has a tool that’s simple to use and allows you to filter credit cards according to your preferences. Do you want a low interest rate or are you trying to avoid fees? Maybe you want to earn travel rewards or transfer a balance. This tool can help you zero in on a credit card that meets your needs.

When I used it, I had to enter my credit score and the state where I live. I specified that I was interested in low rates and travel rewards. Within seconds, the site generated nearly 350 possible choices, one of which had an interest rate of 9.5% on unpaid balances! There were links for more details and eligibility requirements.

One thing I like about the site is there’s no advertising to distract you. Offerings from more than 150 financial institutions are in the database and compared. The data is updated every six months and there’s no fee to use it, so check it out!

Note: As of March 2025, the Trump administration has moved to shut down the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, so this online tool may not be available in the future.
