Looking for Outdoor Fun in San Francisco?

I’ve lived in San Francisco for a long time and I’m still discovering its natural beauty. Our wonderful Recreation & Parks Department has published a list of 100 fun things to do in nature put together by San Francisco Children & Nature. The suggestions are free, which is great for San Francisco residents and visitors alike.

The suggestions are divided up by areas: southwest, southeast, northwest and northeast. Here are some of the ideas that I like best: walk around Mission Creek to look for birds, hug a redwood tree (our state tree) at the base of the Transamerica Pyramid, look for squirrels at Candlestick Point State Recreation Area, watch the hang gliders from the cliffs at Fort Funston, practice your balance at the new Presidio Tunnel Tops Outpost or catch skateboarders at Balboa Skatepark. One of my personal favorite things to do is explore the urban forest on top of Mount Davidson. Did you know that at 938 feet, it’s the highest point in San Francisco? It’s named after the geographer who surveyed it. Don’t forget your hiking shoes and walking sticks!
